Finding a New Path with If Given a Chance: Augie Gonzales’s Journey of Transformation
Thirty years ago, Augustine “Augie” Gonzales faced a challenging environment. Growing up in a broken home, with an abusive father and a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, he spent his early years moving frequently. His family eventually settled in Napa when he was 11, but the lack of stability continued to shape his experience.
Surrounded by friends from similar backgrounds, Augie found himself drawn into gang life as a teenager, a choice that led to an altercation with a rival gang during his junior year, resulting in his expulsion fromNapa High School.
After his expulsion, Augie’s path took him through a series of alternative education programs, including independent studies and a stint in juvenile hall. With the help of dedicated educators, probation officers, and mentors, he gradually began to change. Chamberlain High School, where he completed his senior year, provided him with a supportive, small-class environment that allowed his self-confidence to grow. He recalls taking the initiative to create a sense of pride and community within his school. He proposed having a class president, school colors, and even a mascot—the Chamberlain Knights. Augie’s newfound sense of leadership and responsibility helped him forge a positive identity.
The pivotal turning point in his life came when he joined the Summer Youth Employment Program, which gave him work opportunities and the guidance he desperately needed. Thanks to mentors like Jim King, IGAC Founder, Augie found himself employed each summer, gaining skills and learning the value of hard work. King even recommended him for a week-long training program that prepared young people for professional life, teaching them what to expect in the workplace and how to succeed.
Soon Augie was supported by If Given a Chance (IGAC). The organization provided not only financial support but also a program that surrounded him with people who believed in his potential. The encouragement, guidance, and practical assistance Augie received through If Given a Chance were instrumental in steering him toward a new path.
Today, Augie reflects on his journey with pride and gratitude. His story reminds us of the importance of community, support, and second chances in transforming young lives. IGAC continues to create opportunities for students like Augie, helping them overcome their circumstances and guiding them to brighter futures.
Today, Augie is grateful to work for a company that values mentoring, growth, and promoting from within—principles that echo the support he received from IGAC. His story is a powerful reminder of the impact of mentorship, determination, and the support provided by programs like If Given a Chance.
