If
Given a Chance has learned one very
important thing from the students
we work with. Every single one has
shared the common thread of one significant
adult who believed in them, encouraged
them, supported them, and held them
accountable. Although it also took
the personal courage and drive of
the student themselves to overcome
their obstacles, this supportive
adult provided the encouragement
and support the student needed to
begin their journey of repair.
These devoted adults must be held
as examples to the rest of us, and
we feel they deserve
honor and accolades for their service
to these students. We chose to accomplish
all of this by creating Chance Encounter.
This first year, Harris Nussbaum
was our very first honoree. On September
23rd, 2007, along with cosponsor,
the Napa Valley Register, we hosted
Chance Encounter with Harris Nussbaum.
Our Assembly member Noreen Evans,
Senator Pat Wiggins and Congressman
Mike Thompson all created resolutions
honoring Harris, with Congressman
Thompson reading his resolution into
the Congressional Record from the
floor of Congress!
Many of Harris’ past students
attended the event, most of whom
he had nominated for If Given a Chance.
Harris turned the event into a “teachable
moment” and refocused the spotlight
on those in attendance, especially
on the students.
If
Given a Chance believes that our
community is enriched by amazing
adults who make room in their lives
and hearts for the many lost souls
and walking wounded among our young
people. We acknowledge those who
made this event a success: Copia:
American Center for Wine Food and
the Arts, Melissa Teaff Catering,
