October 19th, 2008 proved to be sunny
and crisp as the day progressed
and the community turned out
to honor two special people who
serve our youth and community
in fantastic ways. Tom
Amato and Leslie Medine were
honored as the 2008 Chance Encounter
honorees by an audience who filled
the lawn and showed their appreciation
for these special people.
Both Tom and Leslie turned the
spotlight back onto the community
which supports them and on the
youth they serve. It is
clear that those who they inspire,
inspire them. This year
If Given a Chance broadened the
selection process by creating
a selection committee of community
members. The committee
consisted of Barbabra Nemko,
Napa County Superintendent of
Education, Carol Glaser, Napa
Valley College, Alissa Genmtile,
On the Move/VOICES, Harris Nussbaum,
Napa Valley College and 1st Chance
Encounter honoree, and Shirn
Vahkaria, Napa County health
and Human Services, in a supportive
role.

As each speaker shared their
reasons for respecting and supporting
the honorees, a theme emerged
of two people who felt honored
by what they do and wishing to
share this honor with those they
work with and serve. A selflessness
of service and a focus on the youth
of our community defined the 2008 honorees.
Both honorees exemplified the focus
and spirit of Chance Encounter; “to
honor those adults who have had a significant
positive impact on the lives of young
people in our community”. You
never know what good you can do or
lives which
will be changed by a Chance Encounter…
